Šilo-Crikvenica swimming marathon

15. Aug. 2012.
Event location:
Crikvenica

The Šilo-Crikvenica swimming marathon has been bringing these two towns together since 1910. In that time, it has grown into a unique sporting event attracting both recreational and professional swimmers. The international swimming competition, between Šilo on the island of Krk and Crikvenica on the coast, took place for the first time in 1910, when it was organised by the Health and Tourism Commission. Since then, the marathon has always taken place on the 14th or 15th of August on the feast of the Assumption of Mary, the patron saint of Crikvenica. A legend of this marathon is Ivan Blašković Ico, who took part in the race every year from 1978 until 1993, regardless of the weather conditions, and earned recognition for his butterfly swimming style. Today the marathon is organised by the members of the Crikvenica Swimming Club, employees of the Harbour Master's Office, the Marine Police and the Town of Crikvenica Administration, divers and medical services. A particularly important role is played by members of the local fishing clubs who sail behind the swimmers, making sure they are safe at all times during the marathon.
