Carnival has always been one of the Crikvenica area’s most popular forms of entertainment. Carnival traditions symbolically summon spring and chase away the spirits of winter, playing a game in which participants change their roles and identities, shedding the burden of the past and embracing new and better opportunities. In the past, Crikvenica’s old- town streets were filled with children and adults in imaginative masks, as well as original entertainments such as the donkey races, which many still remember with a smile... Contemporary Crikvenica strives to preserve its valuable cultural heritage and nurtures the inherited carnival tradition, giving it a modern shape adapted to the faster rhythm of life; it creates new customs and at the same time follows, respects and remembers the old ones with pride... The highlight of the Carnival is the Children’s Parade and the Great Carnival Parade, which take place right by the sea, bringing together numerous participants every year.
