104th Šilo – Crikvenica Marathon

The oldest written record of the marathon is a poster dated August 15th 1912, announcing the "International swimming competition in Crikvenica." First of the local inhabitants who swam the distance between Šilo to Crikvenica was Vlatko Montanari. The start was from the beginning in Šilo, and the finish changed - until 1937 it was behind the main pier on „Petak“, after which it was occasionally on the main beach in Crikvenica, and most often here on the town swimming pool.

The marathon is traditionally swamed on August 15th, the Day of the  Assumption of the blessed Mary, Patroness Saint of Crikvenica. Since 1998 Šilo - Crikvenica Swimming Marathon entered the CRO – CUP Croatian Association of long-distance swimming program and is rated for competitions. Among the  most frequent winners were Stjepan Ptičar from Zagreb in the male swimmers category (4 wins), and  Karla Šitić from Split in the female swimmers category (also 4 wins).
The traditional swimming route from Šilo to Crikvenica is 3500 m long.The marathon starts at  at 10 o´clock in the sea by the waterfront in Šilo and the finish is here at the Town swimming pool.
This year, 323 participants applied for the marathon. They are coming from Croatian, Serbia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Hong Kong and other countries.
