Eels in Dubračina
The small river Dubračina in Crikvenica is home to a species of eel (Anguilla Linnaeus, 1758) that migrates 5,000 kilometres to spawn in the Sargasso Sea, where the females lay several million eggs and then die. The larvae, which hatch from the eggs, take three years to grow to a length of up to 7 centimetres and then make the exact same journey in reverse. Male eels stay at the mouth of the Dubračina, and the females swim upstream to the lake in Tribalj where they stay until sexual maturity and the migration to the Sargasso Sea.
